Future Uses for Our SuperComputer

S.E.T.I.

We are looking at the upcoming distributed effort to provide supercomputer time to the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intellegence.

The data is from the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico, the largest and most sensitive radio telescope in the world.

SETI@home is proposing to make a large parallel machine which drive vastly enhanced searching of the radio data.

From the Big Science homepage:

The Internet's 30,000,000 computers, acting together, form a parallel supercomputer of unprecedented power. Big Science is dedicated to applying this vast computational resource to important scientific problems.

By directly involving the public in science, we hope to increase scientific awareness and strengthen our sense of shared purpose and community.

Our first project, SETI@home, will use the spare power of Internet-connected PCs in the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI).

A browse of the project's matter on the web indicates a dormant effort but rumor of development of the distributed app network is coming through from the parallel crunching crowd.

Stay tuned - this project would be a good one to get behind!
